No matter how sophisticated or comprehensive your backup system is, you will never know if it works unless you actually test it.
Without testing, you can have no confidence at all.

Here are just some things that can go wrong with backups through no direct fault of your own:

Failed Backup Software: The Data just won’t restore from the tape or otehr medium

Incomplete Data:  After a restore, you are missing data from some newer folders that are outside the current backup settings

The Magnet:  Tape is Magnetic Media and is effected by magnetic fields unfortunately you store them by those computer speakers ..

Passwords and Encryption: By far the most common, you come to restore and don’t know the password that was used to secure the backup

The Old Software Version: You can’t restore an old tape with the current software and the old software is not available anymore or is incompatible with the latest operating system.

Poor Quality Media: Old tape media has degraded and cannot be read as the surface of the tape is damaged

It is not our position to frighten you, far from it, however you should be aware that there are simple things that can go wrong with backups and to test them on a regular basis is essential for peace of mind and confidence that should the worst happen you are protected.

i7 Technologies provides  three levels of confidence testing, so whether it is purely a quick test to ensure that you are doing the most obvious things to a full "disaster emulation" we can help.

Basic Confidence - We review your backup strategy and carry out test restoration of critical files using your backup media and software.

Standard Confidence - As Basic, but we also check the media condition, configure automatic software reporting as appropriate for your software and requirements.

Advanced Confidence - As Standard but in addition we carry out a "bare metal" restoration of your system simulating a complete failure of your hardware. This may involve removing your hard drive and replacing it with another similar unit and then restoring your backups or using comparison techniques to determine a complete backup is available. The operation that is used depends on the hardware you have installed as obviously a simulation on a full server will be different to that on a single PC, but just as important.
